Long before S.K. Services was a company, it was a teenager and his father’s lawn mower. Steve Kerns was a freshman in high school, playing ball and coming home to video games, until his dad got tired of it and told him to go cut the grass. He was barely finished when the neighbor came out and asked if he would do theirs next. Then the neighbor after that.

By the end of that same year he was cutting 20 of the 50 houses in the community every week, on an old Craftsman riding mower. Some of the households from that first neighborhood are still customers today, and that is the part we are proudest of. The company grew up around them, and the way we price and route our work still reflects it.

There is a symmetry to how it turned out. Steve’s father, the one who sent him outside in the first place, now works in the business alongside him.

The other thing that has not changed is a line Steve got from his mother and has run the company by ever since: work to live, not live to work. It is why we would rather keep customers for years than chase every job, why our routes are built tight instead of spread thin, and why we will tell you plainly when something is not work we should be doing for you.

At S.K. Services, we continuously explore innovative techniques and eco-friendly solutions to elevate our landscaping, design, and maintenance services.
